How to Cook the Perfect Steak: A Step-by-Step Guide

Nothing beats the flavor and tenderness of a perfectly cooked steak, whether it’s a juicy Ribeye, a tender NY Striploin, or a hearty Ribeye Oven Roast. Follow these steps to ensure your steak is cooked to perfection every time.

Ingredients:

1 Ribeye or NY Striploin steak

Salt and freshly ground black pepper

2 tbsp olive oil (or another high-heat oil)

2 tbsp unsalted butter

2 cloves garlic, crushed

Fresh rosemary or thyme (optional)

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Steak:

Take the steak out of the fridge about 30-60 minutes before cooking to let it reach room temperature. This ensures even cooking. Pat it dry with paper towels.

2. Season Generously:

Season both sides of the steak liberally with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Make sure to press the seasoning into the meat for better flavor absorption.

3. Preheat Your Pan:

Heat a heavy-bottomed skillet or cast-iron pan over high heat. Add the olive oil once the pan is hot and wait until the oil begins to shimmer.

4. Sear the Steak:

Carefully place the steak into the hot pan. Let it sear without moving it for 2-3 minutes until a golden-brown crust forms. Flip the steak and sear the other side for another 2-3 minutes.

5. Add Butter and Aromatics:

Once both sides are seared, reduce the heat to medium and add the butter, crushed garlic, and fresh rosemary or thyme (optional) to the pan. As the butter melts, tilt the pan slightly and use a spoon to continuously baste the steak with the butter for extra flavor.

6. Cook to Your Preferred Doneness:

Use a meat thermometer to ensure your steak reaches your preferred level of doneness:

Rare: 120-125°F (49-52°C)

Medium-rare: 130-135°F (54-57°C)

Medium: 140-145°F (60-63°C)

Medium-well: 150-155°F (66-68°C)

Well-done: 160°F (71°C) and above

7. Rest the Steak:

Once the steak reaches the desired temperature, remove it from the pan and let it rest on a cutting board for 5-10 minutes. This allows the juices to redistribute, keeping the steak tender and juicy.

8. Slice and Serve:

After resting, slice the steak against the grain for maximum tenderness and serve immediately. Enjoy your perfectly cooked steak with your favorite side dishes!

Pro Tips:

Make sure not to overcrowd the pan. If you’re cooking multiple steaks, cook them in batches to avoid steaming.

Use a meat thermometer for accuracy, as guessing the doneness can lead to overcooking or undercooking.

This recipe is simple enough for beginners yet produces restaurant-quality results, making it perfect for a Thanksgiving celebration or any special occasion!
