A Sweet & Savory Twist with Marinated Bulgogi and Wheat Cake

Looking for a comforting Korean dish that’s not spicy but still packed with flavor? Try Royal Bulgogi Tteokbokki (궁중떡볶이)—a traditional soy sauce–based stir-fry made with tender beef bulgogi and chewy wheat cakes. This dish is perfect for the whole family to enjoy, combining sweet, savory, and hearty flavors in one bowl.

You can easily make this delicious dish at home with Marinated Bulgogi and Wheat Cake (밀떡).

Ingredients

  • 1.2lb or 2lb Marinated Bulgogi

  • 500g Wheat Cake (밀떡)

  • 1 medium onion, sliced

  • 1 carrot, julienned

  • 1/2 red bell pepper, sliced

  • 1/2 green bell pepper, sliced

  • 2–3 shiitake mushrooms (optional), sliced

  • 2 cups water (or enough to cover wheat cakes)

  • Sesame oil, sesame seeds, and chopped green onions for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prepare the wheat cakes

    • Soak the wheat cakes in warm water for 10–15 minutes if they feel firm. This helps them cook evenly and become perfectly chewy.

  2. Cook the bulgogi

    • In a large pan or wok, stir-fry the marinated bulgogi over medium-high heat until about 70% cooked. Remove and set aside.

  3. Add vegetables & wheat cakes

    • In the same pan, add onion, carrot, bell peppers, and mushrooms. Stir-fry for 2–3 minutes.

    • Add the soaked wheat cakes and pour in water until they are just covered. Let simmer for 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  4. Combine with bulgogi

    • Return the bulgogi (and its sauce) to the pan. Let everything simmer together for 2–3 more minutes until the flavors come together.

    • Taste and adjust seasoning only if needed—remember, the bulgogi marinade already provides a rich flavor.

  5. Finish & serve

    • Drizzle with sesame oil, sprinkle sesame seeds, and garnish with chopped green onions before serving.

Serving Tips

  • Enjoy it as a main dish with a side of kimchi.

  • Great for family dinners or potluck gatherings since it’s mild yet flavorful.

  • For a heartier meal, add glass noodles (dangmyeon) into the mix.
